The Journey
The Artist’s Journey is a never-ending one. Artists, like everyone else, change and grow, therefore changing and growing in our view of life.
Changes
If you are young you may think you know exactly who you are, what you think, and what you believe. I used to think the same way. I can tell you, though, that as I have gotten older many things have made me change those ideas.
Looking at the world with a balanced view is hard. I find it way too easy in these times to be skeptical about the things I hear. Especially things that go against my basic idea of what is true. However, recognizing that one is never too old to learn and grow is essential both as a person and as an artist.
The Artist’s View
Why as an artist? Our art is meant to say those things we want to say. I want my art to express those things I feel are important. Some of my beliefs have been strengthen over time, but others have changed completely. I want that to be reflected in my work. This is the basis of my artist’s journey.
I have spent much time thinking about what I wanted to say with my art. Many things have influenced that, not the least has been the climate crisis. I have always been inspired by nature and the reality of the threat to our world has only made me more aware of how much I cherish the nature around me.
The Catalyst
My husband and I moved to a new house a couple of years ago. Our dream home with some land, surrounded by trees and lots of ways to enjoy nature. I started gardening for the first time and found that I was wrong about having the “black thumb” I thought I had all these years.
There are now beautiful plants that decorate my studio, a garden for vegetables, and a lovely potted garden on the deck. I look forward to having more gardens to enjoy in the coming years.
When I sit on the deck and look up at the sky, visit local gardens, or paint “en Plein air” my awareness of the fragility of our world is increased.
The Direction
Currently, I am exploring ways to show the beauty of that world with my own voice. I want people to be able to see the wonder of the sky, earth, and water that makes up our environment. I want to raise awareness of the importance of preserving that beauty. For it is in valuing our world that we preserve ourselves.
